Abstract
This paper is aim at establishing a relationship between California Bearing Ratio (CBR), and the index properties of road base materials around Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) area, Ogbomoso, Nigeria. In this respect samples well collected from five (5) different burrow pits used for the construction of the University access roads. In all, a total of thirty (30) laboratory tests including, compaction, CBR, atterberg limit, sieve analysis and specific gravity were performed on soil samples obtained from the burrow pits. Possible linear relationships between CBR and the index properties of the materials were investigated and predictive equations estimating CBR from the experimental index values were derived. It is confirmed through the process that good correlation exists between the two groups. In view of the advantages of theoretical development and economy of the laboratory tests to determine the index properties over the CBR test, a strong correlation between the two tests suggests that the method of approach is sufficient to predict the range of CBR values expected through mathematical analysis without actually performing CBR laboratory tests on soil samples within the locality.
